Dupree and Martin
October 19, 2010
What a week we had out west! After the Kansas race, Martin, Dale Jr. and myself joined Realtree founder Bill Jordan on a whitetail hunt in Montana. Realtree employees Daniel Thomas, Phillip Culpepper and Tom Montgomery came out as well for the adventure. Shortly after arriving we went up to a hilltop to glass for the next morning. Through our spotting scopes from about 1000 yards away we were able to watch Bill Jordan harvest a very nice 10 pt buck, which was also caught on video from 2 different angles. After seeing that and the amount of wildlife in the area, we knew we were in for a great week!

The first two days we had several close encounters but no great opportunities to shoot on the big bucks we had seen glassing. Day 3 was a totally different story though. While hunting in the morning, Tom and I had an encounter with a 10 pt buck that would have scored in the mid 150" class. I had him at 20 yards broadside and couldn’t take the shot because there was a limb in the way of the video camera. Tom wasn’t able to get the deer in view, so that was a heartbreaker. We set back out that afternoon with high hopes for better luck. After about an hour in the stand, my phone started vibrating like crazy and it was a text from Martin saying he had smoked a nice deer.

Now I knew it must be Junior and I’s chance. Well I sat and sat, and we saw a lot of deer, but none made the mistake of coming into bow range. With about 5 minutes before darkness fell, I spotted a nice 10 pt off to my left side. This time though, luck wasn’t on his side as I drew and took the shot. He only went about 50 yds before piling up. The next morning, as I was rolling out of bed, I saw the black pickup speed out of camp, which could only mean one thing – Junior had a buck down! That’s exactly what had happened. He was able to stalk a really nice 9 pt the last morning of the hunt. It was a great week overall – we all had a blast meeting new friends in Montana and better yet, we all took nice bucks!

New Mexico Elk Hunt
September 30, 2010
I’ve been busy with all of my Foundation’s events in New Jersey and being at my home track of Dover, but I wanted to share a recent hunting story and some pictures with you guys.
After the Richmond race, Ryan Newman and I headed out to go bow hunting with Realtree founder Bill Jordan in New Mexico. The Driven to Hunt team from the Outdoor Channel came along to take footage that will be part of a show down the road. We didn’t get in til late that night, but we slept a few hours then got up to drive to our site. We were in up in a tree stand, and we had guides that were making cow sounds to encourage the elks to come closer to us.
That first evening we posted up by a watering hole as that’s where they went at night to cool down. While we were waiting for the elk, we did see a black bear and her cubs, and also a coyote. We thought the bears were pretty sweet, but the coyote is no good when you’re hunting because they scare a lot of the other animals away. I also saw a bull elk, which is what we were waiting for, but he was too small to shoot. But Newman saw a huge elk that evening and brought him down. For the area we were in, it was one of the largest ones that anybody had killed, a 6x7 measuring 363 inches!
The next day, back at the watering hole, it was my turn to get one. Mine wasn’t quite as big as Ryan’s but it was still pretty sizeable at 6x6 and 310 inches. I’ll make sure to post the air date for the show when I know it. I’m looking forward to reliving that trip by watching the footage!

I’m headed to Montana to hunt next week with some buddies, so check back in soon for stories and photos from that trip too. Check back!

THE OUTER BANKS- Part 2
4/4/2011
Hey guys! I've been down here on the Outer Banks of North Carolina fishing with my good buddies on the Canyon Runner doing charters for blue fin tuna. The fishing has been incredibly good. The average-sized fish we've been reeling in is between 200-300 lbs and 70-80 inches. I've included photos of one monster I caught with Captain Dennis, of A-Salt-Weapon, that taped out at 93". That's 7 feet, 8 inches long for those of you that don't want to do the math. Only thing to complain about is the cold, rainy weather… can't wait for it to warm up down here!

**Editor’s note: The Outer Banks (or OBX as locals refer to it) are a 200 mile chain of thin barrier islands off the coast of North Carolina. They are far removed from the main land of the state, and famous for being the site of many shipwrecks. It is also the area where the Wright Brothers’ first flight took place.
MEXICO FISHING TRIP

Hey MTJAuthentics fans!
As you can tell from the incredible pictures, I recently went to Mexico to do some fishing and freedive spearfishing with a group of buddies from the Northeast. The tuna fishing was slow because of cold green water conditions; warm blue water is the best conditions for tuna. Despite this, we persevered and found some very good bottom fishing for snappers and cabrilla. On the last day of the trip, my good friend Andy Wurst and I were able to do some spearfishing and really got into some of the best spearfishing I’ve ever seen! We speared large cubera snappers and roosterfish. We capped the trip off with a journey to a remote fishing camp which was a real bonus! Next up I’ll be heading to the Outer Banks of North Carolina in search of bluefin tuna with spinning gear! Would love to hear what fishing successes you guys are having this month, so share them in the forum!
Enjoy watching my buddy Martin in the 500 this weekend!
Tight lines!
